Hideo Kojima, creator of “Death Stranding 2”: “I won’t pass the torch to anyone”

The highly anticipated game "Death Stranding 2. On the Beach" is out this June 26th. To mark the occasion, its creator, Japanese artist Hideo Kojima, gave a few interviews to the press. A huge name in video games, he shared his thoughts on topics that are dear to him, such as mortality, human interaction, and cinema.
Hideo Kojima's address book, 61, transcends all borders, both geographical and artistic. The Japanese video game creator, who created the acclaimed Metal Gear series, among others, is a close friend of Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, who lent his features and voice to a character in the first installment of Death Stranding, released in 2019. He is also close to French musician Woodkid, who co-wrote the soundtrack for Death Stranding 2. On the Beach, the most anticipated game of the summer (available from June 26, 2025 on PlayStation 5).
In its Australian edition, The Guardian discusses another important relationship. “George [Miller] is my teacher, my God,” the creator declared, while in Sydney in early June for a film festival. And the Australian director—who is behind Mad Max, among others—returns the favor, calling Kojima “almost a brother.” The two artists presented a joint panel discussion at the festival. And Miller has also become a virtual character in Death Stranding 2, which takes place partly in Australia.
Guardian journalist Patrick Lum applauds the game, which he says delivers the best video game representation ever offered of the island's fauna:
“Seeing the unmistakable hopping silhouette of a kangaroo on the horizon in bright sunlight was a touching and unexpected surprise for the urban Australian in me.”
Quoted by the Guardian, Hideo Kojima says he preferred to go to the zoo rather than attend certain screenings.
